Here is an example ERD that tracks user-owned copies for performances such as a live concert. Note the use of regions to delimit functional areas, the use of color for special cases, and a legend to describe it all.
Talk through the ERD. You can see the blue section is performance data, the red section contains non-model tables, and the purple is user data. Talk with a colleague about the ERD. You should discover that communicating about the structure comes naturally and questions about exactly what data is being tracked are answered quickly and precisely. Relationships are clearly defined and labeled.
